Radiological Studies on Salivary Glands

Abstract
Author has studied the anatomical contour of the salivary glands in normal adult males by sialogram. Subjects were 78 cases, composed of 38 parotid glands and 40 sub maxillary glands.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1) The shape of the glands by sialogram was elliptical in high percentages, 41. 11% in parotid gland and, 22.50% in submaxillary gland.
2) The average number of the interlobar duct was 5.53¡¾1.69 in parotid: gland and 6.28¡¾1.83. in submaxillary gland. The number of the branches was 5 in high percentages that was 28.95% in parotid gland and 25.00% in submaxillary gland.
3) The average number of the interlobular ductules in submaxillary gland was 24, 15¡¾6.92.
4) The number of the branches to accessory gland was one in high percentage that was 38.84% in parotid: duct and, 45.00% in, submaxillary duct. The origin of these branches located mostly near the middle third in parotid duct and proximal: third in, submaxillary duct.
5) The average length of Stensen¢¥s duct was 6.93¡¾0.75 cm (7.0.3¡¾0.47cm in left and 6.82¡¾0.94 cm in right). And the length from the point that Stensen¢¥s duct ran around the masseter muscle to gland was 4.75¡¾0.73 cm.
The average length of Warton¢¥s duct- was 5.50¡¾0. 86 cm (5.31¡¾0.89 cm in left and 5.75¡¾0.80cm in right).
6)The diameter of the Stensen¢¥s duct-was 1.72¡¾0.60 mm in mid portion, 1.93¡¾0.49 mm in first branching portion of gland and that of Warton¢¥s duct was 2.70¡¾0.95 mm, 0.55¡¾0.86 mm respectively.
7) 10.53% of the Stensen¢¥s duct does- not run around the masseter muscle.
